As told by Doug
For those of you who don’t know the story (and there are actually lots of stories), Lakshmi, a young member of my fellowship group, invited Toni to come with her in January of 2015. Rather than just visit a time or two to be polite, Toni found our international, intergenerational bunch to be pretty interesting, and she stayed on to become a huge contributor. For over a year I often thanked her for the way she came “for the sake of others,” but I had no thought of asking her out due to my own circumstances, and because I didn’t want to do something weird to hurt the group. (What did I think this was, youth group?!?)
Finally, after 14 months of activities together once, twice, and even three times a week, I had the idea that since everyone else enjoyed talking with Toni so much, maybe I would too. I also wondered if Toni, a busy professional counselor, would like a turn to talk for a change. I asked her out for coffee on February 27th 2016, and to my great surprise, I fell madly in love right away. We were married at Christ Church Plano on May 6, 2017.
Toni makes more space for God in her life than anyone I know, and he fills it. We both came to the Anglican church from other backgrounds some years ago now, and love the liturgy, sacraments, and daily Psalms, readings and prayers.
Psalm 126 expresses how we feel about the surprise of spending this part of our lives together after experiencing some very hard times.
When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.â€
The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.
Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.
